Status of work:
  • The propagation nursery has been established and newly collected plants are propagated there.
  • A field, where all mother plants from the LIRE gene pool are planted, was established in March 2008.
  • Progenies of mother plants were planted into the test fields in March 2008.

In order to propagate the collected plant material for LIRE's breeding programme and further experiments on Jatropha, LIRE established a nursery in the vicinity of DATS College in November 2007. The nursery has a capacity for 4500 plants and is currently used for the propagation of seedlings and cuttings.
LIRE is propagating Jatropha germplasm from plants collected in different areas of Lao PDR (Project J1.2) and from the Monitoring Program (Project J1.1). Since LIRE has been collecting plants for its gene pool for some time now, a number of plants are available for propagation. In the nursery, LIRE is aiming for a fast multiplication and production of progenies for further experiments.
At the moment there is a lack of suitable and tested seeds on the market for establishing Jatropha plantations. In order to produce seeds and to conserve the genetic material of our plants, LIRE established a field with germplasm from the gene pool about 10 km from Vientiane. There, cuttings from all collected varieties were planted and cultivated for seed production and further experiments. If new and interesting plants are found, cuttings will be planted in the field and used for further reproduction.
