J3 Agronomic aspects of plantation management
Jatropha Program > J3. Agronomic aspects of plantation management
Last Update: 05. June 2008

Description:
What are the most efficient ways to operate small scale and large scale plantations?

Expected Outcomes:
  • Insights into various options for managing Jatropha plantations, and their environmental effects.
  • A set of commercially relevant data that will allow to build a business plan for operating Jatropha plantations in Laos.

LIRE - Intercropping with dry rice on a Jatropha plantation
LIRE - Jatropha plant builds leaves after pruning in dry season
Intercropping with dry rice on a Jatropha plantation Jatropha plant builds leaves after pruning in dry season

Running projects:
J3.1 Plant density and plantation strategy
Find out the best strategy for planting Jatropha (Hedges, high density plantation for early fruit building, low density plantation for big plants)
J3.2 Pruning methods
Examine different strategies for pruning (Stimulation for leaf building, shifting of fruit maturation time, techniques for pruning)
J3.3 Intercropping
Create concepts for intercropping and find out suitable plants for suppression of weeds, nitrogen fixation and extra yield of vegetables or fruits

Projects under formulation and looking for funding:
J3.4 Industrially operated Jatropha plantations
Collect and clarify all relevant information for industrially operated Jatropha plantations.
J3.5 Pilot plantations
Install pilot plantations with diverse management regimes, test resulting seed and compare with other sources (ie. component J4).
J3.6 Assessment of environmental impacts
Assess environmental impacts of large Jatropha areas.
