Jatropha Program > J5. Hot extraction of Jatropha oil
Last Update: 20. February 2008

Activities:
A.
Conduct hot-pressing abroad with batches of seeds from various sources in South East Asia.
B.
Assess the quality of the oil.
C.
If A turns out to be promising: Assess and pick a suitable press for importing to Laos.
D.
Find a suitable industrial partner interested in hot extraction.
E.
Analyze and assess the quality of the extracted oil and the implications for further processing.
F.
Publish findings.

Expected Outcomes:
a.
Report which shows press results of several press trials with different Jatropha seeds from South East Asia.
b.
Comparison to the cold press operation including all relevant press parameters such as: oil yield, oil content …
c.

Hot oil extraction means oil extraction using high temperature. Some oil presses can regulate their operating temperature, so that they can be operated with cold/hot pressing mode.
With the hot oil extraction operation, it is possible to extract more oil as with the cold oil extraction, because the oil flows more easily out of the cappilars due to a higher viscosity. The resulting press cake has just a low oil content of approximately 3 – 7 % which makes this press method interesting.
However, during hot oil extraction several contents from the seed are solved into the oil like gum substances and non-organic material such as phosphorus and magnesium. These substances are mostly undesirable and have to be removed through a following refinery step.

Finished projects:
Conduct hot-pressing abroad with batches of seeds from various sources in Laos. Assess the quality of the oil.

Projects under formulation and looking for funding:
J5.2 Pilot hot extraction in Laos
  • Assess and pick a suitable press for importing to Laos.
  • Find a suitable industrial partner interested in hot extraction.
